Hey, I popped open the hood on my 99 f250 V10 4wd to give it a pre-season once-over. I don't drive it much during the nice weather months. I checked fluids and fired it up, let it come up to temp. Was just looking around to make sure no pests had set up homes in there. I noticed this wire hanging free. It is red, has a connector on the end. It is encased in black flex-tube. It comes out of a little silver and black box mounted in front of the battery. Any idea what this is?
bump...hey guys...a little help? I'm doing plugs and coils this week. I can get a better pic if needed. The only thing I can make out written on it is "PRO..." then it fades. You know how printing does on a foil sticker? The letters are bright green. If I touch the wire to the pos terminal on the battery...there are two blinking red lights toward the bottem edge of the foil sticker. I tried that...figured the guage of the wire plus it's red insulation was a fair indication that it wants to be a power lead. I did it with the engine off and with it on. NO evidence of anything this box may be effecting. For all I know...it is some kind of reverse polarity protection for the charging circuit or something passive like that. I'm not a pro mechanic...but I've been around the block. I have scoured my Ford service and repair CD looking for a hint. This one has me scratching my head.
I didn't try the radio both ways. I'll check that. It is the factory single-disc cd system. Nothing added. I think the only after-market item on the truck is the trailer brake controler. It functions with or without this box powered.
Ok, last night I traced the other wire. It is a white wire that runs over the top of the radiator to another box. This one has its writing intact. It says "Pro-Tec vehicle protection system remote anode". I did a web search. Pro-Tec is a local outfit here in Columbus that sells coating and rust protection products to the local dealerships. Pro-Tec Exterior, Interior and Rust Protection System for your Vehicle My guess is that this is some kind of electronic rust protection system the dealer probably up-sold the original owner on.
Try your horn. [anti theft alarm connector]
C1005 - right front of vehical
C1004 - Front RH side of lower radiator support, on low pitch horn
C1006 - Front RH side of lower radiator support, on high pitch horn
I'm not pretending to be correct my truck doesn't have that component in that location nor factory anti theft.
Cheers.
I re-connected it to the power. It's definitely an add-on anti-rust device. My gut tells me it was likely a dealer up-sell scam item. However, I will say this...I use and abuse my truck. It earns it's stall in the garage. I have scratches and dings everywhere...but ZERO rust. So...who knows, right?
