My wife's '01 Expy has developed a water leak from under the left side dash when it rains. It got so bad last weekend that I could hear a beeping tone coming from under the dash and the accessories would still be functional with key turned off. Took it to the dealer today and found out they have another one in the shop for the EXACT same problem. They aren't going to fix mine until they are sure they've fixed the first one.
My question is, has anyone here had the same problem? If so, what was done to fix it?
Expys and F-150s are known for water leakage on the driver side, many differant problems occur due to water shorting out the GEM module, which controls all the accesories, there should be a tsb or special service message about that problem, If I were you I would tell the dealer to check OASIS and they will find the fix
The windshield was replaced on my 1997 expy in 1999. Within 6 months I was having all sorts of misc. electronic problems. Heater fan going on, windows going up and down, radio not working, 4wd solenoids clicking and 4wd lights going on and off, abs module failure(s). Ford replaced, under warranty, the alternator, two air bag modules and conducted diagnoses of the problem. I determined that it was a water related problem and they put the vehicle through many car washes to check it out. They found a leak around the left side of the windshield. It leaked directly onto the GEM (generic electronics module-I think thats what its called) and was causing all the misc. shorting type of problems. They told me the warranty did not cover water related damage but they would cover the repair by using an 'allowance'. This must be something that is up to the dealers discretion to do. So, they replaced the GEM and the problems went away. I saw the old GEM and it was very corroded. I went to the shop (Mr. Windshield-Cambridge, NY) that replaced the windshield (before it rained again) and stated the leak problem and they would provide no remedy except for slopping a bunch of sealer around the gasket. I took the truck to another shop and they said that they could remove the windshield (if it came out without breaking) and reseal it. It came out very easily, due to the poor setting of the previously applied glue, and they resealed it properly. I have had no water related problems since.
