I'd get a 260 remington in a good bolt action if I buy a new deer rifle. Good range & little recoil. It will take a deer at 300 yds if you hit it right. For now I'll shoot my 308 & keep my 30/06 for my backup gun. Both are good deer rifles
Thank you all for your responses! I am a big fan of Remington, but I really want the removable box mag. I have had the opertunity to take shots out to 300 yards this past year, and I was looking for something that would put enough energy into the animals body to provide a quick death with little suffering. Now I KNOW that that will require ALOT of practice on my part. I will check into the ballistics of all the rounds you guys suggested, as well as take into account the availibilty of each round.
Thanks again!

IMHO Flat shooting use Hornaday boat tail 158 gr, in a 7mm Mag for the long shots. I had one in a Ruger #1 Falling block with a 3.5 x 10 Leopold vxIII. I would put a paper plate up & drive 1/4 mile & shot across 40 acre blocks. 2" groups of 5 @ 1/4 mile. Shootin down the pipe.
For a back up get a Browning BAR in .270 cal. put on a Leoplold VXIII 2.5 x 8 with over under sights. Still plenty of knockdown power for an Elk or Muley

Remington markets their Model 700 with a detachable box magazine!!!
300 yards is a ways out there, but, just a small step for the grand ole '06!!
IF you get into handloading, the Sierra GameKing 165 gr BTHP will do the job with ease, and it flies like the 168 gr BTHP MatchKing bullet out to 300 yds., plus.
So many options and calibers. . . . so little $$$ and time!
Anyway, micah......Nice shot and buck, and I do love the 30-06.......Matter of fact, I'll be out in the woods with mine tomorrow morning at oh-dark-thirty......
Real men hunt with knives tied to sticks. We stay in a tree until a deer comes close enough. Then we jump onto the deer's back and go for a ride. Usually we just ride the deer to our waiting truck. Home delivery, baby.
