1966 Auto Tranny Options?

I have a '66 F100 with 352 and NP203 manual tranny. I'm pulling the motor for a complete overhaul and was thinking about installing a C4 or C6 and put the shifter on the floor/hump (not on the column). Would like some advice... will either tranny bolt on directly? Are there adapter kits I might need or will I need to reposition the tranny mount? New drive shaft? Help!

Thanks, Matt

There is no such thing as an NP203. You prolly have a New Process 435 (NP435) 4 speed manual transmission.

NP435: Reverse is down and back towards the seat. Reverse on the Warner T-18 is up and towards the dash.

The only A/T offered for 1965/67 F100/350's with the 352 was the MX Cruise-O-Matic.

The C6 was not available in F100/350's until 1968. No 352 (360/390 or any other FE engine) used a C4.

C4's were used in 1965/67's with the 240 & 300 I-6's.

There were no A/T's available on these trucks with a floor shaft. That option wasn't available until the 1990's.

Thanks Bill... you're right about the tranny.. NP425.. finger fumbles on my part.

Your note suggests that I might be able to use a C6 from a 68 or later truck. Will it bolt on directly? Is there a way to install a floor shaft from some later configuration or would I be forced to pull the steering column from the same truck I get the tranny?

Thanks, Matt

Trans

As long as you get a FE C6 it will bolt to the engine. Floor shifter C6 trans have a different lever on the trans itself and are getting increasingly hard to find. You will probably have to use an aftermarket cable shifter or a Lokar shifter. Here's a chart to identify what engine family a C6 is for.

C6
  • General Information
    • Years: 1966-1996
    • Bell housing: Integral
      • Big block (351M, 460, etc): 7-11/16" top bolt centers, No cutout on bottom
      • Diesel (426): 7-11/16" top bolt centers; Cutout on bottom
      • FE block (330/360/390): Round with starter at about 9:00
      • Lincoln (460): 5-3/4" top bolt centers; Pointed top
      • Lincoln (462): 5-1/4" top bolt centers; Pointed top
      • Small block (302, 351W, etc): 5-1/8" top bolt centers

I changed to a C6, and used a B&M cable shifter. The only issue I had is that the park position on the shifter doesn't jive with the trans. In other words, when I put it in park, the shifter doesn't lock into park. As mentioned, the lever is diff. A Lokar shifter may be the better choice. It will look more "correct", and may even work better. unless yo're looking to "bang" gears, that may be a better choice. There are lots of good shifters out there, just do a little research. I used a Z Gate.

Matt, Changing the column isn't hard at all. I added a C6 at the same time that I swapped to power steering and disc brakes, so I swapped in the 76 column from my donor truck into my 66. It is basically bolt up exchange, with a difference only in the dash cuff. The later cuff does not wrap around as deeply as your current one. You can use it as is, with longer bolts.
