what is the norm for the ford superduty diesel exhaust? every now and then my f350 will put out white smoke exhaust when i crank up in the winter, or sometimes when i crank and then go down the road to a stop light, it lets out some smoke, fogs over everyone sitting behind me, then quits when i go. this only happens once in a while. is this serious or is it just a diesel engine doing its thing? this is my first diesel truck.
My '06 does not smoke. Rarely even a puff of black smoke. IMO a properly running 6.0 does not and should not smoke. White smoke is always a bad sign. White smoke is either unburned raw fuel or coolant.
I would recommend going down to the 6.0 forum for expert advice.
Well is it white smoke, or just white fog? Cuase if it's cold enough, that's just air condensing in the hot exhaust, and when you start driving it goes away in the airflow behind the truck. When I lived in Colorado my truck would blow out tons of white fog just idling in the driveway, but seeing as how that was 30,000 miles and two years ago, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't a bad sign. As long as its only happening when it's cold and you aren't losing power or anything, it's no big deal. This still happens to me in Lubbock sometimes, mainly when it's cold and wet. I don't know why this combo makes it happen, but I just got it looked over at the dealership on Monday, and my engine is still tip-top.
He took my advice and posted down in the 6.0 forum. I think they are giving him some good advice. And you probably hit on it too. EGR cooler more than likely.
