I'm not sure about taller, but they're definitely wider. That's why they have the "humps" on the insides of the bedsides, for tire clearance. I'm guessing about 2-3" on each side.
Only problem with shortening a long bed is the wheel wells will not be centered. And if you put it on a 114" wheelbase frame, the wheel wells will not fit over the wheels running boards will not meet up etc. You'd have to do it on an F2+ and shorten the frame in the back as well. Not sure why you would want to do such a thing kind of making a mess for 1 1/2 inches in height and acatually reducing the width between the wheel indents.
Well, I still have to adjust my frame... and I'll be making this bed from scratch anyways, so all the custom problems aren't really an issue. I'd just like to see one done before I commit, ha.
This guy has an F-3 with a shortened box (purple one), he didn't like it so I sold him the f-2 chassis with 8' box about a month ago. now he's selling the entire collection of parts and trucks, I wish I had more space I would buy all of them for the price he's asking. I get the feeling he's desperate to sell quick as the price keeps dropping.
maybe if you email him he can send you pictures of the shortened box?

Steffen i`m kinda confused!!! your making your bed from scratch but your asking how to shorten a long bed??? just make your own, you can make it as high and long as you want, its the easiest thing to do! i got some pics in my album of my homeade one.
Hmmm. I shortened my '41 1-ton box, but I guess that wouldn't help. I believe it's the same box but of course different trucks. I can get pics this weekend if you'd like although it's just a rusty bed on a frame.
Note that after shortening the bed I realized how much I like the side mounted tires and that a bed too short starts to look goofy. Oh well.
If I remember right, the clearance wells on the '41 looked as if they are ment for extreme suspension deflection as the tires came nowhere near them. Maybe someone can verify on the later models.
Microsoft Paint works great for figuring out the right look. I "borrowed" a bunch of photos off the internet and cut and pasted them.

lol I'm looking for finished pictures to help decied if I want to go that route or not. Making its the easy part
just trying to give you a hard time, to kinda visualise what it would look like either use cardboard or plywood, mock up one side, i`m not sure what your planning to do (change frame or not) slide in the rear end to where a long box would sit, install the fender onto the plywood,(take pics for reference) then slide the axle to the short box measurement and do the same thing, (cut the plywood to box length)this would give you some idea before you start cutting and building and OOPs it dosen`t look the same you envisioned, this way you can also play with the height, moving the sides up or down to see what would look best, this is where i goofed up i should of went higher with my box instead of stock height.
Good advise, lol probably be worth looking into before even ordering steel.
Right now I don't have a bed so I'm playing with several different directions. I always thought the extra height and width of the long bed fitted better.
All in the planing stage, I still have to shorten the frame and move the rear axle, in which I'm waiting till I can replace the front and rear axles (I'm going 4x4), so I basicly have to have a well defined game plan before that and even though the bed wouldn't effect it too much, it's best to know before you cut what's going on down the line.
I know of at least two members here planning to make such a bed for a a 53-56, just haven't seen any pictures of it done...
if you are going the dually way, put your rear fender on one rear wheel and figure out how mutch spacing you need between the outside wheel and the fender, then measure from the inside of the fender(mounting flange) to the center of the frame x2 and you have your box width, it definately would look up higher than a half ton.
I'll have to switch out the rear axle too, it needs to have the same gearing as the front.
I'm planning on 38" or so tires, and a low ride, well low for a 4x4. I'm not a fan of the raised look... so it should be a pain the booty to do, but it will look cool and work well in the end, lol.
Before that... I should probably upgrade the powertrain.
