I just bought my '89 F150 Lariat with the 5.8 in it 3 weeks ago, been driving fine then all of a sudden the truck would stall with no warning. It would just die. It wouldn't sputter or nothing. I would try and fire it back up and wouldn't here the fuel pump engage .........it would just crank and crank and crank. After a few minutes, I would turn the key again, hear the pump engage, and it would then start........run for a bit and die again. I'm thinking the relay is getting hot and shutting down, then when it's cooled it opens up for power to go to the pump??? Am I close? <!-- / message --> <!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --> <!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_sig --> <!-- controls -->
You could try switching the relay for another one. Another problem is that your truck has two pumps (three if you have dual tanks), one in the tank and a high press one on the frame rail.
However a first step may be to check for any stored trouble codes. You can go to fordfuelinjection.com and from the list on the right click on "self test" if you don`t have a code reader.
Hopefully some of the EFI experts will give an opinion soon.
I just had that problem with my 89 150. Ended up replacing the fuel filter (which was plugged with a brown mud) because the truck had sat for several years. Thought we had it licked and the first time out it died again. This time it did start and I sputtered home. By the time I was home things seemed fine. But each time it died after a shorter distance. What had happened is that the fuel selector valve on the frame was also plugged with the same mud -- then we pulled the tanks and found that the inside had corroded. After all was said and done the tanks, in tank pumps and the selector valve were all replaced. Seems that the ethanol in the gas can be very corrosive over a time when condensation forms and things just sit around.
I only have 25,800 miles on that 89 now. But I'm ready to begin using it again!
