I like the color-matched-to-body painted grill when it's a 78-79, and the ugly plastic center insert is replaced with something else. The '73-76 shell looks good silver to me. I'm knocking out the dings, using filler, and painting it w/ silver rim paint. doesn't look that bad. I painted the rear bumper with it. Good stuff. The inserts on the 73-76 look good black or silver.
I'm not a big fan of the blacked out grille inserts but to each their own, i like the look of the factory argent grey, but wether it's grey, black or chrome the 73-77 grilles look better than the cheesy 78-79 egg crate grilles IMHO.
I'm warming up to the 78-79 grill shell, but I still don't like the egg crate insert.
im in the same boat with you on that one. i think it looks a LOT better with the chrome slat grilles. thought about puttin a 76/77 grille in my 78, but then it wouldnt be true to its year, so im opting not to.
my avatar is a good shot of my 76 with the grille painted black. the old one had met a t-post in a not nice way with the P.O. so its all new metal and inserts after i painted em black.
I like them painted black also, but other than the pic in LMC, i want to see a 73'-77' with one of the billet grilles installed. I dont think I will use one, but I have been looking for a pic with one installed to make up my mind, but still havnt run across anybody with one in.

i wont be doin a slatted billet grille on my 76, but i will probably use one on my 78. pics will go up in about a year or so when i post the project pics.
Well I bit the bullet and took the inserts out today and painted them black. I am very happy that I did. I thought it looked mean before, now it really does. I screwed up and got semi-gloss black paint, oh well I guess that will be a good base for when I go back over it with gloss black.
Interesting. Post pics if you can.
I just got an idea. The grill inserts are so cheap you could always keep a stock pair, a black pair or a 73-75 pair and a 76-77 pair of either or both colors and just swap them out every now and they for a different look.

Actually that is a great idea. The junkyard 2 miles from my house has a good set of 73-75 inserts I believe. I can ****** them up for cheap probably since the guy is a good friend of mine.
Its already dark here but I did take a pic earlier while there was some light left with my phone. Right now I cant get it to send to the computer, dang technology, lol.
