I've been offered a 2004 Harley Edition 4X4 F350 with a 6.0 as a trade on another truck I have for sale. I don't know a damn thing about the 6.0 and wonder if I should even be considering taking this thing. I haven't heard the most positive things about the engine so figured I should ask here. What should I be looking for with regards to this truck, any particular things I should look into that may be unique to this engine or truck? Thanks.
The 1st thing you have to answer and be honest, DO YOU NEED A DIESEL?? If not you will hate the added maint. costs and if you ignore them you will hate the diesel because it will bite you good. This is where you have to start.
Do I just need to get the vin and talk to a dealer to get the report I need?
Yes, all you need is a vin and you should be able to post it in the Oasis request thread and someone will email you back with an attachment with the report.
My $0.02, think hard and do your research on the 04. Mine is an 04 and I am spending a lot of money right now, head gaskets, oil cooler, egr cooler, fuel pump, FICM, and now alternator. Next to the 03 the 04 is the worst for problems and things seem to be better after those years. I still love my truck but hate the motor right now. Hopefully she will settle down and give me 5 more years of bliss. Good luck with your decision. Remember this is just me, there are plenty of happy motors out there, somewhere.......

I am one of the happy ones. My 6.0 has provided me with 71 thousand miles of trouble free miles.
I did though notice an oil leak on one of the heads though so I took it to the dealership and we decided to take the motor out and reseal it. Everything went great. Came back and it has been great.
I think my 6.0 does so well is bc I do EVERYTHING Ford says to do in order to maintain the truck. I change the oil every 5 thousand and sometimes 4. Fuel filters every other time. It has never let me down knock on wood.
I am going to get atleast 200,000 miles on it. I just know that my EGR cooler is going to die on me at some point so I am waiting for that one......to help prolong that, at every oil change we pull the EGR out and clean it.
I LOVE my 6.0 and will keep her in service for a long time!!
oh and i forgot to add....my 6.0 did give me some trouble but did not leave me on the side of the road.
The battery light came on one day but i just ignored it. I drove it all day and the next day it was still on so i took it to the dealership. The alternator was dieing. They ordered me a new one and put it on. The truck did not leave me broke down but kept going.
Alternator and a minor oil leak on the head and thats it for my 6.0. Love it to death!

That is awesome they were able to fix your leak. Mine has leaked for day one and continues even after HG's were replaced. Every dealer says the same thing, "It is a diesel, it is suppose to leak". Got tired of fighting and will run this rig until it can't run anymore. It is hard to find someone that cares about what they do and do it right. Stick with them man and treat them right.
I was also apprehensive about my truck due to mixed reviews of the 6.0, however after finding a truck that met all of my qualifications I have been very happy with my purchase.
If you haven't already spend some time reading the posts in the tech folder.
Follows are some recommendations:
* Get an Oasis report and CarFax report - if either points to a history of mechanical problems walk away * Check for coolant puking * Look for a truck with no aftermarket performance modifications * Try to find out as much as possible about the routine maintenance and compare the history to the Ford recommendations - routine maintenance is the key to long term reliability

The guy that worked on diesels was a good friend. He was at the dealership and took care of me and REALLY good care of my truck. He was fired the other day b/c they found another diesel tech that promised sales so they ousted my diesel guy.
He still works at his house so thats where I go!
If you find a service guy that cares about the customer and the truck, then that means alot of success.

Cleaning the egr valve will not prolong the egr cooler. Only a coolant filter can help you there.
Sluggish...you've been give the best advise. Go get an OASIS report done. This will tell you any warranty maintenance done on the truck. If the report comes back with powertrain issues, pass it by.
I bought my 03 back in Feb of 07 (it had 34K miles on it) and today I've got 99,600 trouble free miles on it. I don't tow much but the crew cab is usually full. I'm getting 16MPG and I drive about 15 miles round trip to work everyday. On the weekends I then to be on the interstate off to some meeting or other. I'm the guy in the green King Ranch cruising along at 75 to 80 MPH...and still getting 16 mpg!
