I am new to diesel engines and am looking at a 2002 F-350 Dually with a 7.3 that has 207,000 miles. The engine started and I drove the truck for about ten minutes with no problems. I stopped the truck and checked the oil and found a lot of air bubbles on the dip stick. Is this normal foe a diesel engine or does it indicate a problem? Also are there any other issues that I should look for with the model? Any advice would be appreciated.
I just purchase my 7.3 a month ago, check the front end or ask, the steering parts are what wear on these, ball joints, tie rod ends ext. I would not be concerned about the miles. Look through the posts all over this board and you will learn what to look for in no time. You will learn alot. I am not sure about your bubbles but Im sure someone will pipe in if a problem or not. Good Luck.
International makes a anti-foaming agent additive for the 7.3. Its a pint, not sure what it costs. When I worked at an international dealer we always added this when performing an oil change. Airated oil will actually affect the performance of the engine. I run synthetic oil and never have airation issues.
Thanks for the information. I will check the front end tomorrow. I guess that the truck has regular dino oil in it so from what you are telling me the areation is normal. If I buy it tomorrow I will change out to synthetic, I run synthetic in everything I own.
Aeration of the oil is not normal. It's either caused by using the wrong oil, or not changing the oil often enough. A good dino oil will do fine in these motors. An oil change should fix the aeration issues unless what you're seeing is just a few bubbles on the dipstick caused by pulling it out of the pan.
