If you pull the covers the raito will be stamped into the side of the ring gear. I doubt if you want to do that, so you could get close to what gears are in it by marking the tire and spinning the driveshaft. Put a mark on your tire, then spin your driveshaft while counting the amount of turns it takes to spin the tire a full turn: if it takes 3 and 3/4 turns of the driveshaft to make 1 full turn of the tire. your gears would be close to 375to 1 or 373 to 1. It isn't perfect but should get you close. hope this helps you.
your 85 has 3.50 gears and your 81 also has 3.50 gears w/ a limited slip. I'm guessing (pretty sure) they're both ford nine inch rear ends which will ether be a 28 or 31 spline if I'm not mistaken.
of course this is assuming noone has swapped it out before you got it ...
Let's just assume they haven't been. I'm only going off the door code numbers he gave me. Only way to find out for sure is to pop those suckers open....
