Startup noises
Hello, I have a 1997 Expedition XLT, and when I start the thing, there seems to be a rattle of some sort that is quite annoying. I have looked closely, but cannot find anything obviously loose. It sounds like a plastic cover vibrating, and it only lasts a couple of seconds. It always does this when cold, and randomly when warm/hot. I have been told that the Ford 5.4 litres are known for this. Is this true?

I have found on my 97 Expedition when I replaced the Ford PCV valve with an aftermarket valve which is located on the passenger side valve cover I would get a buzzing noise after start up and sometimes at idle. Hope this helps.

I too have had a noise coming from the pcv. I replaced the stock Motorcraft pcv with a purolator pcv, it still makes a little noise but it doesn't buzz like the Motorcraft did. It just sounds like a faint rattle. If you give it some gas, it goes away. I also have a wistle between 1500 and 2000 RPM's I haven't been able to find that yet. Well, this isn't a buzz or anything like that. It sounds like a loose pulley or something when you start the vehicle. It only occurs on startup, and never at idle or speed. Usually when it's warm, it doesn't make the noise, only when cold it seems. I am still investigating this problem.
