I had a few drops of coolant under my truck the other day. I was taking it in for the recall, so I asked them to find where the leak was coming from. They pressure tested the system for a few hours, no leaks. The tech said the water pump is probably starting to go, but couldn't be sure. He wanted to put dye in the system, but since the price of diesel went up a year and half ago I've only put about 2000 miles on the truck and he wanted to me to put a couple of thousand on before looking for the leak again.
Would a pressure test find a faulty water pump? I would do the pump myself, but don't look forward to doing it in the street in once it gets cold. I'm thinking at this point I can make it to the spring.
i had the same problem something about the weep hole likes to drip whenever its goin bad and at first mine was a few and turned into a massive puddle but a water pump took me about 2 hours with a few cold brews and a pack of smokes and it was done.
Perhaps the better question to answer is not how long between a small and a large puddle, but how long between a leak and the fan turning into a propeller and lunching your radiator and possibly intercooler.
Usually, a leaky seal mans a bearing has developed some play. That play induces wobble to the shaft and fan. It go awhile, or let loose at any time.
The first radiator you lose to a launched fan will be your last, and you'll never let another water pump wait again.
Just my advice.
i was having same trouble it was running down my hose there is a o ring in the flange that comes out of the water pump actually passed pressure test only leakked certain times replaced o ring has been dry
So yesterday I took the belt off, the fan nor shaft have any play. Put it back together, went for a drive and no leak. Maybe I'm loosing my mind and it wasn't coolant. I will take the truck out again next weekend and see if anything leaks.
Mine recentaly started showing a drip on the lower hose. If I wipe it down and drive, it's all dry for several hours after. Next day, it's wet on lower edge at water pump inlet flange, and drips down to lower hose. john8403, is that where you replaced the o-ring, at the flange on bottom side of water pump? Did you use any sealer or RTV?
