After my little cracked tire episode I decided to do a full inspection of my entire inventory to include spare tires.
Everything else is fine but what I discovered was my space saver spare in my Taurus only had, get this....4.00 PSI in the tire! The tire calls for 60 PSI! How stupid am I!
Live and learn so they say and thank GOD I didn't need the spare.
So, for those of you as negligent as me, check your spare tires please.
I gotta check mine on my truck, going to florida in a week would hate to be stranded with a flat and a flat spare! I remember getting a flat in my 1984 Olds Ciera in the middle of nowhere Ohio and my spare had just enough air in it to keep the rim off the ground! The tire and jack had never been used and probably sitll had the air from the factory in it!
space saver spare tires have very poor sidewalls. that is why they call for 60 psi inflation. with lower pressure, the sidewall will collapse.
that is also why they are a one time use of under 60 miles.
Good call Tom, I didnt even catch that it was one of those "doughnut" tires.
My bad I misread and thought it was a full spare!
Coulda been worse. Could be like the Focus the past few years. The "standard" spare is a can of Fix-A-Flat. You have to pay for the doughnut. That is cheeeeeap. I know the Focus is the bottom end car but come on.

I was not aware that the doughnuts were only supposed to be used once. Good reason to go ahead and pay for a full-size spare.

The full size spare will not fit in the nifty little storage area that that Ford provided on the Taurus Wagons. Just enough room for the donut tire, tire iron, sissor jack and a jumper cable.
