How can I tell if I have a Free Wheeling truck? Mine has the the FW wheels, and the stripes (the PO added them after repaint).
The truck does look to be a freewheeler. The wheels were optional on all trimlines so you can't tell be just the wheels. The pinstripe is definately a freewheelin' style, however as you say the PO had them done.
The only way to really know is to contact Ford for a Build Sheet for your truck.
I thought of yours when I saw this thread come up. I saw it on e-bay yesterday & it looks great. I hope you get what you need out of it it looks good.

I have had no interest at all, odd, as I know I could sell my 79 bronco at the drop of a hat. But,it meens too much to me at this point. I put up my 1970 Mercury Marauder for sale,a few low bids, was looking for $2800.00 Its a rare car,no rust............this economy..............
The roof actually does appear to be fake vinyl, but very well done. Anyway expect a note in a day or so on radio, may have just gotten one from a donor, waiting for reply now.
Old thread but since someone reseurrected it I'll reply to this post, my truck had the same roof DKW, the build sheet calls it "special paint, textured black", it was an option.
Does anyone have pics of a restored or original "free wheeling" truck? This style interests me the most as I have not seen many of them. I believe the graphics on the sides are just stickers that wore off over time so many of them are probably not original. The interior on them was interesting too as it was silver, black with bright highlights.
Look up a magazine called
pickup van and 4wd
December of 1978
That magazine has a whole article about the free wheeling edition bronco
