Without knowing what engine you have I will tell you what I did on my 85 F150 302.
I had cat. back duals put on with a single muffler, comparable to the big name exhust, it sounded like a friggin PRIUS OMG!, so I went back, had the cats. removed, went with true duals, I got the sound I wanted, a good low rumble at idle that gets a little better under load, no poppy cracky crap, I like it.
Youtube can help you out a lot. Flowmaster 40, 44's, glasspacks etc etc etc. The searches are endless. This helps give a name to sounds you are after to approach your shop with.
well my current set up is stock manifolds, with dual glasspacks coming out behind the rear wheels. i have 2 40 series flows that were given to me off a 69 mustang. so i'm gonna put the flows in place of the glasspacks. but as far as headers, and dumping them at the axle or runnin 'em out the back, i'm stuck. i need to have my whole exhaust redone because the pipe i have is dryrotted. so i'm thinkin 2&1/2" pipe. what would an h pipe/x-pipe do for me?
Personnally I would do the flowmasters with it exiting out the back it gives it a little deeper growl in my book. I would just do a y pipe if it was me. I have had several trucks with that setup and I really like it.
