Styleside or Flareside?

I bought a shortbed '69 F-100 4wd last weekend and it doesn't have a bed on it. How can you tell which bed it came from Ford with?

There should be a body code on the VIN tag above where it lists HP and RPM

The body code won't tell you anything about the bed for a 69 or later.

Bobby, you got me on that one.

I spent a lot of time researching this yesterday after viewing this same question on that other site. One place in the Master Parts Catalog says that for 70 and up, the bed style cannot be determined by anything on the data/VIN plate. Now that you brought this to my attention, I found another page in the catalog with the same information you linked to.

I didn't look at the page you just linked, but I did go to the 1969 VIN Data page, and it does not have that breakdown. It only lists 81,84 and 85, which does not tell the bed style. Same for the 67 and 68 pages.

Excerpted from page 66 in the General Info Section of the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

"Most body parts and some chassis parts are listed according to body type. From 1964 thru 1969 certain body type info was shown on the Warranty Plate.

Exceptions to this were back-of-cab equipment, pickup boxes 83 (Flareside) and 99 (Styleside).

Beginning with 1970, body type and trim information is shown in a three digit BODY code for all trucks."

In other words, 1970 and later...the type of back-of-cab equipment is known by the BODY code.

btw: If you had taken me up on my free parts catalog offer...by waltzin' on over here yesterday, you coulda saved me the trouble of typing all this jazz.

My door tag has 4B81 for the body code. The other bumpside site lists 81 as a conventional cab in the VIN section and under the production numbers section it lists 81 as chassis-cab. Just trying to figure out which bed it had, if any, from Ford!
