The filter heater has to be accessed from the inside, you have to remove the filter and the header to get to it. I think it was plc7.3 posted the fix for it and it is an oring, I don't know if it is a standard one or not.
mine is having the same issue, will start then die, if it sits for just a min or two it starts back up. question i have is could i have too much water in my tanks? currently i have about a 1/4 tank.
i have already replaced injectors, instal kit, fuel heater o-rings. was fine till i got down to like 1/4 tank.
if this is the issue, is there an easier way to drain the tank without dropping it?
thanks guys. still new the the IDI world..
rhoades here is a write up i used yesterday to change the 2 o-rings on my filter houseing it worked like a champ installed this morning no leaks at the top of the heater wire any more for my retuen line i used 1/4 id fuel hose as i was in a jam and thats all they had it the parts store the OE clamps work well it the fuel hose i used
Hate to ask this , but I'm curious... is there a cord or wire that goes into the fuel heater? I never knew what that plug was, and there was never a wire on my truck, or the 7.3 idi engine I swapped into it...
Yes the wire is blue in color in the same harness you have a wire that goes to the water in fuel wire , the fuel heater wire ,and a wire that hooks on a transducer on the side of the fuel tower I forget what it does but ill take a picture tommorw
Thanks for the info and awesome write up good work. Now to dig back in as I missed the the inner O-ring, dooh! Any chance on posting the size of O-rings used.
Thanks for the help!
As far as the O-ring size .... After you push the heater connector trhough the housing it comes out as a whole the you need to seperate the 2 halfs the metal disc have 3 or 4 tabs holding it together then you will see the O-ring it is flat on all sides below the Oring is a little tiny metal washer I put an o ring on that was just barley a size bigger than the flat washer so that I know it exceded the washer makeing a contact.... I have read as people have used injector cap o rings but I have not tried it my self... On the heater element it self you'll see 6 little tabs I sanded all the debris off the tabs and metal plate where the tabs seat as a good measure.... There is a locking tab that is a pain to push the prong thru the heater houseing just be paintent and it will come un done =) good luck to you sir!!!! -vic

That would actually be very helpful, as there are no wires going to my fuel filter tower at all right now, and it's been that way since I've owned it.
Okie on mine when i got to a 1/4 tank it would act like it was sucking air. I discovered that inside the tanks there is a plastic pick up straw (if you will) that was broke off. So we used some fuel line to fix that problem for the test and it worked. So if you haven't checked that out i would do so, that is if it runs good until you get to a 1/4 tank.
Thanks vfelix. I have seen those wires tucked away under the hood, never knew what they were for. Now I just wonder why they were unhooked in the first place...
Hook them up the top blue squared wire is for the fuel heater, the bottom single pole is for the fuel in water light and the other one is a swicth forget what for but they all only fit on what they go too try it out =)
