I GOT A 88 F-150 5.0 4X4 I BOUGHT A COUPLE WEEKS AGO. THE TRUCK RAN PERFECT FOR ABOUT A WEEK. THE TRUCK IS NOW FEELING LIKE ITS SURGING AND CUTTING OUT GOING DOWN THE ROAD BUT IDLING AND REVING IT UP STOPPED IT RUNS FINE. AS SOON AS YOU START TO DRIVE IT ITS ACTING UP AND IT GETS WORSE THE HOTTER IT GETS. IVE REPLACED CAP/ROTOR/PLUGS/WIRES/AIR FILTER BECAUSE THEY WERE ALL SHOT. IT ALMOST FEELS LIKE THE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING BUT IN A WAY IT DOESNT.
THE TRUCK ALSO AT THE SAME TIME WONT START. I CAN JUMP THE SOLENOID AND START IT WITH THE CLUTCH IN/OUT. THE SOLENOID IS WORKING PROPERLY BECAUSE I CAN JUMP IT FROM THE POST WHERE THE IGNITION PLUGS IN TO THE HOT SIDE AND IT WILL START. THERES A RED/LT BLUE WIRE THAT RUNS FROM THE SOLENOID AND SPLITS TO THE DISTRIBUTOR AND CLUTCH INTERLOCK SWITCH. IM NOT SURE IF THAT WIRES GETTING POWER.
IT WONT START AT ALL BY TURNING THE KEY. LIKE I SAID IT WILL START IF I JUMP THE SOLENOID. THE STARTER SOLENOID IS THE RELAY ON THIS TRUCK THERE IS NO SEPERATE RELAY.
TESTING THE COIL LATER ON TODAY. I AGREE THAT THE COILS INSIDE COULD BE BREAKING DOWN WHEN GETTING HOT
If they're not already, give your battery connections a good cleaning. If there's acidic build up, mix equal parts of baking soda and water and apply with a paint brush to neutralize the acid, then follow up with a wire brush to make them shine and then make sure the connectors are good and tight when you hook them back up.
I'd suspect your ignition switch is bad, but I had a '75 chevy that wouldn't start occasionally because the connections would loosen up. Regular cleaning and tightening solved the problem.
IVE INSTALLED NEW BATTERY TERMINALS TO FORGOT TO STATE THAT. ITS ALSO A FAIRLY NEW BATTERY. IT COULD BE THE IGNITION SWITCH BUT POWER RUNS FROM THE SWITCH TO THE CLUTCH INTERLOCK SWITCH AND THEN TO THE SOLENOID THOUGH CORRECT? SO I WONT KNOW FOR SURE IF THE SWITCH IS BAD UNLESS I CAN CHECK THE CLUTCH SWITCH SOMEHOW.
THE STARTING PROBLEM IS NOW FIXED BUT NOW IM ON THE RUNNING COND AND I AM NOT GETTING THE SAME ANSWERS EVERYWHERE I ASK.
ON MY 1988 AND 1990 MODEL F-150 5.0 THERE IS BRACKET BESIDE THE COIL WITH 2 RELAY LIKE BOXES WITH WIRES AND VACCUMM LINES RUNNING TO BOTH OF THEM. THERE ARE 2 WIRES AND 2 VACCUMM LINES ON BOTH. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO.
I HAVE BEEN TOLD ONE IS REGULATING FUEL PRESSURE AND THE OTHER IS FOR AIR/MIXTURE. IVE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY ARE FOR EMISSION SENSORS ON THE TRUCK AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY RUNNING ISSUES.
THE REASON I ASK IS THAT THERE ARE BLACK COVERS ON THE TOP OF EACH OF THESE ON MY 1990 MODEL BUT MY 1988 (THE PROBLEM CHILD) THEY ARE OPEN TO THE WEATHER AND IF ITS A SWITCH THATS STICKING AND ITS VACCUMM OPERATED THAT THIS COULD BE MY PROBLEM. BUT AT THE SAME TIME NO ONE CAN TELL ME WHAT THEY ARE OR EVEN WHAT THEY DO. IVE RAN THROUGH MY MANUAL SEVERAL TIMES AND DONT SEE THEM.
