Smoking 5.4 (Literally).......

I have a 2000 XLT X......5.4 and 154,000 plus miles....Now I have a big smoker!!!! I have not been able to pinpoint the issue, but I have oil leaking down onto the factory " Y " pipe. Here is the catch......It only does this once in a while....when the RPM's hit around 3500, this seems to be when it is most likely to happen. However it will do this going down the interstate or backing out of the driveway......Oil level does not seem to have an effect on the smoking. It will smoke at a full level or even 2 qrts low.....( I tried both)...Valve cover gaskets appear to be fine, I find no evidence of the leak around them........I thought at one time it may be coming from the intake area around the top of head.........Any IDEAS????? I am about ready to start building a 429 \ 460 FE to drop in it... Please respond if you anything about this....it is driving me nuts.....: confused:

Thanks,
Greg

Only thing I can tell you is to pressure wash it squeaky clean, run it, let it drip oil, turn it off and do you best to look in the back of the engine to see where it's wet.

Basic stuff and stuff you've already done but finding a leak isn't really rocket science but it can be time consuming.

Good luck!

Good suggestion to get everything clean - I'd also recommend an ultraviolet dye added to the oil.

X2 on what Monsta said.

Just because it's at 154k and high RPM only, here is a something to look for...

If the oil return system is partially blocked in a head, the oil level can rise under high RPM faster than it drains out. Look for a valve cover (PCV etc) leak on the high side. Normally they leak on the low side 'cuz that's where the oil is.

Also agree start with a good cleaning, locating a oil leak on the rear of the engine can be a real P.I.T.A. due to lack of space and light. I would also suggest checking the 5.4 Forum as I seem to remember reading here about the 5.4's having a machining problem with with the heads that would cause the head gasket to leak oil. Good luck

Thanks for the input guys. Of course, I have tried the clean and look route....again and have a better idea of what has happened. It appears to be a leaking head gasket....I pulled the intake today to fix a leak I had on the intake, and can see where the head gasket is leaking on the top side of the head and running down the back of the motor. Anyone got a 5.4 for sale?

Thanks,
Greg

Sorry to hear that, might want to try a salvage yard or pull the head and repair.
