i need help choosing a cam for my truck 84 F150 C4 tranny with 308 gears. this is what i have a preformer intake & 1406 carb i'm getting some gt40 heads a 308 (302 bored .030 over)block but, i don't know what cam to get for it other than an RV type. what should i get????? thanks for your help!!
I'm guessing that this is the 302 that you are talking about. I know a lot of the mustang guys like to use a Ford Motorsport either B303 cam or the E303 cam with the GT40 heads. You may also end up having to run the 351w firing order like the 5.0HO which could mean needing a different crank though I'm not entirely sure about that part.
is it a roller cam block and is it still carbed? If it is fuel injected and roller cam compatible than i would go with a mustang HO cam and 1.7 rockers. If it is a standard cam block with a carb than i would go with something with no more than 280 duration @ .050 because you will need a converter, gears and have possible vacume problems.
here are some of the facts that i got from the site that i'm getting the block from. the one i'm getting is .030 over A PROFESSIONALLY REMANUFACTURED 302/5.0 LITER BLOCK (.040 OVER) DESIGNED FOR HYDRAULIC ROLLER CAMS (1986 TO 1995 MUSTANGS AND OTHER FORD MODELS).
THESE SHORT BLOCKS ARE BUILT FOR 9:1 COMPRESSION WHEN STOCK 58ccHEADS ARE USED.
Performance Camshaft : $219.95 FMS B303 or E303 / TrickFlow Stage 1 or 2
The bigger the cam you go the more it loses vacuum at idle. So if any accessories need a strong vacuum signal they may not work as well when stock. The biggest one is brakes. Its not as drastic as it sounds its all in what you want or willing to put up with. Also a big cam needs a bigger converter for the trans and more gear for the rear, because you will lose some of your low end torque so the truck will stall on take off. By the way, the only stock head that has 58cc chambers is a gt40p, basically no normal heads chambers are that small. most gt40s were around 64 which means you will end up with less than 9 to 1 compression. The smallest cam in that list i think is the stage one.
the builder told me that the cam he was going to upgrade ,the b303, to won't need a bigger converter & i told him everything that i was going with. he also stated that the head choice was a good one too!
