Have to say I agree. I've been offering sympathy and suggestions and he keeps reiterating the same thing. It's getting tiresome. I didn't realize how many threads he's popped up in complaining about the width of the Expy. I doubt Ford is ever going to cave in - hell, they haven't recalled the leaky 5.4 Windsors yet or the 5.4's with the rough idle problem.
If my Expy didn't fit in the garage, I'd just park in the driveway or on the street.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 07:49 PM (EST)]I gave her a practical solution (lateral doggie doors installed at the sides of the garage door frame at mirror height) but still, complaints! Perhaps she should wash her truck in hot water and pray for shrinkage.

I agree. Come on DebnKev, admit that you feel like fools for not checking the width issue first. You should probably call and complain to your homes builder, after all.. he should have known that you were going to by an Expedition. How dare he install the "small" doors. Shame on you for blaiming anybody else for your oversight!
BTW, as this relates to garages in general, I always have told myself that when I have a house built the garage will be 'oversize'.
By this I mean:
1. ceiling high enough to allow the installation of an above ground lift in one of the bays
2. bays wide enough to allow me to fully open my car / truck doors without hitting the vehical in the next bay or the junk stacked on shelves beside the walls
3. bays deep enough to allow a work bench AND room to work at it without having open a door and back a vehical outside
4. BAY DOORS of appropriate size to allow me to get ANY of my vehicals in and out without hitting top or sides of door openings
I do understand DebnKen's problem and am somewhat sumpathic for them.
Would we have them simply REMOVE the passanger side mirror?
Most homes that 'come' with a 3 car garage are in the 'upper' price range. For a couple grand, which is less then 1% of the cost of such a home, it could be built with at least one oversized bay and door.
Or for the money spent on the Expy, $35k-$45k, you could get a nice mini van, cross ute, or cute ute that will fit.
No doubt guys. Come on already, somebody else isn't ALWAYS responsible for your screw up's in life. I'm sure you could pay somebody to retrofit with smaller mirrors.
I recently installed 48 inch tires on my Expy. Imagine the shock and horror I experienced when I pulled in the garage the first time and tore the roof off of my beloved Expy. After a lengthy repair involving miles of duct tape and gallons of JB weld, I found that I could get the Expy in the garage if I let the air out of all the tires first. However, this routine proved to be too time consuming, especially the part where I send my young children out in the subzero WI weather to refill the tires with their bicycle pumps.
Fortunately, after reading your post, I now know this problem is not my fault. Therefore, I intend to sue Ford (since they should have foreseen this problem with a 4X4 off road capable vehicle) to force them to retrofit my Expy with an automatic tire deflation/inflation system with an electric eye to sense any low clearance obstacles.
I knew I should've bought that Hummer instead of the Expy - the Hummer had the tire inflation system standard.
AMEN LUXURY! That is the exact way I feel about the whole situation also! They should have thought about thier purchase before they signed on the dotted line. They obviously knew that they had an 8' door, yet they failed to double check and triple check the clearances! I custom built my house, but had stipulations on my garage with the homeowners association. I built it as big as I could and mine barely fits .........but it does go in and you can still close the garage door, and open the truck doors to get out or into the vehicle!
I agree totally guys, having to roll down the windows with small children in the car is unacceptable? What about when you open the doors to get out? Or the old days when you had to get out to lock the hubs.
Ford would have saved themselves millions, maybe billions in litigations, if they had only kept the lockouts. The same people who complain about having to lockout hubs amd fold in mirrors, are the same type that would sue after they wrecked their explorer when they blew a tire. They would never have bought an SUV. SUVs are not cars, if you want all the luxuries, go buy a continental or cadillac. I cringe every time i see an SUV with a soccer ball sticker in the window. You know, their previous vehicle was either a minivan or honda accord. I was nearly hit yesterday by one of those drivers. If you don't need an SUV, don't buy one.
By the way SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. Family is not included. Family vehicle = Minivan
