I currently have a 1993 Bronco, 5.8L V8, 6" Procomp, 35x14.50 Swampers, running on an 8.8 rear with i think 3.55s in it. Other than that i was currious as to what anyone or someone could tell me about some cheap but good upgrades in any department from engine to small stuff. Also, any info that i should know as far as what to look out for and a good website to order things through since im from Tennessee, but stationed in hawaii with the Army. Any and all help will be highly appreciated.
If you are planning on keeping the lift and tires, the absolute first thing on your list has to be a gear change. 35" tires on 3.55 gears has got to be the most brutal thing in the world to drive.
The easiest way to win power on a Bronco without spending big bucks is to upgrade the exhaust system, breathing really helps those engines. Let me check an old thread of mine and i'll complete the info.
Well, i'm back, apparantley the best you'll find is the Bassini brand, use some shorty headers (ceramic coated are the best, they improve flow even further) then the rest of the system.
Also, running 35" you might want to check wich pump your hidraulic steering has, if it's an OEM, you should upgrade for a Saginaw unit (it was used on the E-series and other commercial Ford vehicles), apparently it's a direct swap, with little to no modifications.
Depending on how strict smog is in your area, I'd consider longtubes with a custom exhaust and intake. More expensive than shorties, but better torque. Also an upgrade to better ford heads like iron gt40s would give you good bang for the buck depending on what you get em for and whether they need work.
i dont like 3.55's with the stock 31-10.50's, i cant imagine driving it with 35's on it. regearing will make a world of difference in performance and wont be lugging the motor. it may even burn less fuel with the engine not working as hard. as it is now, i doubt your overdrive is even useable. 3.55's with 31's is 1600 rpm in overdrive, mine downshifts at the slightest grade increase. id say 4.56 would be about right with that tall of a tire. i plan to go with 4.10 in mine someday, and im staying with 31's.
like racsan said
"id say 4.56 would be about right with that tall of a tire"
i have 4.56 in mine for 37"s but i got engine upgrades so i got more power from the motor i can have a little higher gear.
I had 3.55's in before 4.56 and dude i couldnt even spin 2wd in dirt. whole different story now.
yes, gear changes are expensive but its well worth it, it will save ur e4od tranny too.
thanks for the info, and i previously priced 4.56 gears with air lockers which almost made me **** myself when i got the quote for around 4500 bucks...buut i know it must be done...and as far as engine upgrades im running stock engine with 3" straight dual exhaust w/ no muffler. and a small conflict between threads with the shorty or long headers. which would be better? and how about intake?

4500 for new gears + air lockers seems pretty high. Do you really need selectable lockers? How about a detroit locker for the rear and a limited slip for the front?
Since you've already ditched the cats you are already smog-illegal so you might as well get long tube headers. They are better than shorties from everything I've read on here.
for that tire you should run nothing less then 4.88's. people forget that its not just the height of the tire but also the weight of the tire that drains your power. Im running 4.88's with 35's and love the combo. had i gone with 4.56 i would have been pissed. for 37's i would run 5.13's for sure. no motor upgrade aside from a super charger will give you the power to turn those tires like a gear change will in this case.
also shop around, stay away from the big chain 4wd shops like 4wp's. those places are very overpriced in regards to this kind of work and frankly there mechanics arnt always certified.
Kemicals right. Ive got 37s and i mistakenly put 4.56 in. I wanted 4.88 but 5.13 would be the vest. I suggest 4.56 for 35"s though.
Long tube headers id say. Easier flow. Im strsight piped with long tubes and 3 in it sounds great.
To hell with k&n intakes. 250 bucks for the same flow u can make with custom intake from autozone. Just masure up your throttle body abd some other masurements and go to the zone n get some stuff. N a cone filter. Dont matter wat brsnd. Dont be fooled by k&ns big ads and prices their the same **** as many others.
I also strongly suggest a accel or msd coil. My stock one worked fine but i put a accel coil in and it seems to have much more power n it starts wayyy quicker.
Also throw some new plugs n wires in it. Even iff they still work.
Hope this helps.
If u wanna gain sayy 30 hp then ditch the clutch fan and get two electric fans. Dont go chesp on this though.
