A buddy of mine looked for a couple of weeks for a superduty, and I looked at a couple of them with him. I told him to look at this site for lots of good information, gave him the pros and cons of v10 or diesel. He decided on diesel.
I have had 3 6.0 (2 04's) one 05 and one 7.3 and have had good luck with them all knock on wood. I did not get to see the one he bought until he purchased it.
It is a 2004 and a bit rougher than the ones we looked at together and has about 150k. That normally isn't an issue, but I noticed a couple of things. The egr valve was disconnected and the coolant bottle had been puking lots of coolant (white dry residue) and when it started the engine had a tiny skip then went away.
I bit my tongue and I am holding my breath that it is not anything major like head gaskets or egr coolant, you know etc. It's too late to say anything now isn't it?
I would have told him to pass on that one if I'd seen it.
The shame of it is, if it turns out to be trouble he'll be turned off from Fords and that will be to bad for the brand.
Ahhhh that doesnt sound promising. Hope he about STOLE it as it sounds like he is in for some expensive repairs. Egr delete and head studs and drive it another 150K
sounds like your not the only thing venting. I spent over a year to find my truck. I looked and a few hundred of them to find what I was after and sadly I had to pay for what I was after.
I know, I spent lots of time looking for trucks when I bought mine. You can't give into emotion, but some people do, or get impatient, human nature. I told him to get an oasis and to pay for a pre buy at a ford dealer, at least they would have pressure checked the coolant system and scanned for codes. Oh well.
