A couple years ago I was looking at a truck with a 8.2 Detroit, and Allison.
The owner said it needed a head gasket...I started doing a little digging online....With the bit of data that I gathered, I decided to steer clear even though the truck was cheap. These engines had a lot of cracked head, and head gasket problems from the imformation I could gather.

I decided not to play.

I agree, you will notice fuel savings with an 8.2. They did call them the "fuel pincher."

Ok, drove Blue home yesterday, he has a Detroit w/turbo 5 speed w/Eaton 2 speed rear, 45600 miles, pulled the hills pretty good for a 27yr old truck! Not gonna win any races, but,,, it runs good and drives good.
Here is album

Back in 80, when they introduced it, Detroit called it the Fuel Pincher. Shows it on wikipedia briefly.

Detroit Diesel called the 8.2L the "fuel pincher". It was a marketing pitch when the engine came out.

Oops, didn't go far enough down in the thread.

That's a clean old truck. Just hope you don't ever have to replace the injectors.

Actually, once I have the box off, I am going to sell it, it has a lift gate and I thought about pulling that off, but I think it is attached to the frame, it is a good solid truck, but realistically, I can't justify the $2500 just to have it sit around.

That would make a really cool Flatbed Dump
I use mine all the time.....
I understand the responsible thing to do would be to sell it though
