Hi there,
on my 1986 F-150, (4.9 L, Sixinline. automatic tranny, none electronic carb) I changed the distributor from the original with modul to a new vacuum distributor from Cardone/ Rockauto.
Whatever I try and do, I get no spark....
The coil`s ok, and the wiring, too. There`s electric juice all the way to the distributor, but no spark... Checked the ballast resistor, it`s ok.
Maybe it`s important to mention that the electronic modul of the original distributor broke off as I tried to setup while the engine was running.
Is it possible that it caused a short circuit somewhere ?
I tried everything, but without success... Is the new distributor damaged ?
I´m really at the and of my knowledge. Living in germany, it`s hard to get informations about american trucks... so you`re my only hope.
Best regards from Bavaria,
Since you have changed to a older dist without a module mounted on it, you also bought a module that mounts on the fender and plugs into the older style vacuum distributor correct?

Do I need an electronic modul although the distributor is mechanical ?
Do you have a link to such a part if I really need it ?
Or which F-150 before the 1986 had the external module ?
The picture in the previous post shows what you need. The module is the box with the blue sticker on it in the picture. All Ford cars and trucks with all types of engines had the same box from around 76-the late 80's. They are a few different types, and you can tell what you have by the color of the plastic were the wires go into the box. The normal box that everyone uses has the "blue" plastic around the wires. Try to avoid the other color boxes.
The only way you do not need the above box is if you have a very old dist with points inside it.
I can see claerly now... first I had the original distributor with the modul sittn` a side of it. I thought I simply change to a vacuum one. Not knowing I still need a seperate ingnition control modul....
You helped me very much !!! BIG THANKS !!!
