As many of you have already heard, there is a recall on our trucks right now for upgrading the Cruise Control deactivation switch.
Well, I don't want them "upgrading" the software that is in the engine control unit while it's there.
The truck runs GREAT just as it is, good power, decent mileage, and I have a Power Hungry Performance chip installed that I don't want them messing up.
It took a bit of looking around and taking some careful measurements, but I believe that I have found a solution to this dilemma.
Pictures tell a much better story, but I have to say one thing that is not shown in the pictures.
The wiring for the data port had to be rerouted up over the data port mount instead of running under it, in order for new "assembly" to mate up to the mounting screws.
WOW! you aint messin' around! they never hooked anything up to my obd port when they did my recall. i actually stood right there and watched them. took 7 minutes.....
Now I'm scared to have this recall done. How vital do you think it is? I don't want them messing up my PHP, I love it! My local dealership is pretty bad, the guy at the service counter won't even look a person in the eye, let alone make sure they don't "update" my PCM. Can I do the recall myself? The letter I got was a little cryptic, what exactly needs to be done? If not, and if I end up doing what Dan did, is there sufficient incentive for them to cut and splice the wires to the data port to get the lock off?
Looks good Dan, but can you not just slide the lock toward one side a little and rotate it 90 deg to gain access to the plug?
I wonder if you wouldn't be better off just tucking the plug up high under the dash and mounting a dummy OBDII connector in it's place. That way they should at least contact you about a problem before digging into it.
Great idea Dan. Thanks for sharing your idea with us. The thought of the mickykanics at the local stealership doing me a favor of updating my PCM makes me shudder. What is the model # of the lock? is it avaliable at HD or Lowes?

you dont have to be scared of this recall. the only reason they will get into the cab of your truck is to pop the hood. all it is, is a plug that they put on the brake cylinder and then hook it into your existing harness. its plug and play and they wont even take your truck into the back to do the recall. i have had this done on 2 ford trucks now and neither time did they do anything other than put the new harness in real quick and send you on your way. if you guys want to see what it looks like tomorrow around noon or so when i get off of work i will take a pic so you can see it. i stood right there and watched them install the new harness both times......
I thought you had previously drilled it too Dan. I was thinking of doing it and using a small luggage type lock. Anyway, that ought to keep even the average idiot out of there.
