hello I have a 78 F-250 custom with a 79 7.5L 460 and a C-4 (4 speed).
I've replaced the starter numerous times and still have the same problem the starter does good for a couple of days and then starts grinding a ltttle more n more. If you have any answers let me know thanks!
are the teeth on the fly wheel worn? does your starter need to be shimmed? i have seen cases were a man will buy several starters until he actualy gets a good starter.....they are usualy remaned any way...what exactly is it doing?.....is it sounding like you have a dead battery or?
hello I have a 78 F-250 custom with a 79 7.5L 460 and a C-4 (4 speed). Somehow I doubt that. If you have an automatic, it is a C6, not a C4. A C4 would never have been put behind a 460. And if it is a C6, it is a three speed. If you have a 4 speed manual, it is either an NP435 New Process or a T18 Borg-Warner.

Sounds like the teeth on the starter ring gear of the flexplate (or flywheel, depending on what you really have) are shot. What have the other starter teeth looked like when you pulled them out?
no the ring gear is brand new the starter is brand new but as far as a shim im not sure which shim i need i think there are two different ones! as far as the noise its like a little starter gring its not the battery its brand new as well. the tranny is a 4-speed but i thought it was C-4 maybe it's a T-18 B.W.! thanks for that info not sure if it is a stock bell housing though gonna try and check on that!
I don't know but highly doubt you have a C4 transmission behind a 460. If someone is giving you a starter that is for a C4 equiped truck, more than likely you have a problem with teeth meshing. If you have a 4 speed transmission it is not a C4.
o.k. sorry about the other thread but it's not a C-4 i think someone told me that it's a T-18 borg warrener? but i will check out the spacer pack thanks again.
