I am changing out the rear blocks out of my truck and added a four inch block in its place.Does any one know the torque for the u bolts 5/8.BTW any pointers
I just did this recently. Was not difficult. Just be sure you are on a good level surface and have sturdy jack stands that are stable when extended.
First step is to put a chock block in front of and behind each front wheel.
Jack the truck up far enough so that when the jack stands are holding the frame up there is just enough height to remove the wheels. Use a floor jack to hold the weight of the axle on the side you are working on. Loosen the nuts(and that is the hardest part) and remove the u-bolts. Lower the jack so the axle drops enough to remove the old block and replace with new. Jack the axle up until the location pin is in the hole in bottom of block and install the new u-bolts. I had to use a piece of pipe slid over a breaker bar to get enough leverage to break the nuts loose. A good quality air impact wrench would come in quite handy. Repeat for second side. If all goes well it should take less then 2 hours, even quicker with air tools.
Shoots,my torque wrench only goes to 150lb.It should be good for a couple of days till i can get my hands on a bigger one.BTW what is those ears on the factory block that goes over the axle for?is it needed? The 4 inch block that i put on doesent have it,is it still ok.
If you don't bottom out the rear suspension you should be ok. Do you have the stock overload springs? If you do it takes a lot of weight in the bed to bottom out.
