Glenn, i haven't switched over to Royal Purple yet, but i know Cody has a dealer he gets his from which is who got us the oil to test on the dyno. i won't switch to royal purple til i do my stuff to this engine...... hahahaha
Amsoil is a very good synthetic oil. There is no need to change a synthetic oil at 3000 miles, even changing dino oil at 3000 miles is a bit much.
I use Amsoil 15w-40 marine/diesel synthetic oil, plus a good oil filter like the Ford factory filters. Don't get cheap on the filters! The benefits of synthetic oil are less wear, better fuel mileage & lower temps on moving parts because there is less friction.
A 5w-40 oil in the OBS 7.3's is not recommended. If you are worried about low temps use a straight 30w oil.
You can go to the Amsoil web site & read up on the recommendations for your average area temps & get the right oil weights based on real research not by what someone down the block thinks should work.
Some over-the-road guys are getting 200,000 miles between oil changes using a FSS oil system & synthetic oil.
If my truck leaked oil I would not use a synthetic! No sense in pissing money away like that!
At one time I had a real nasty car that was on its last legs & I ran oil that came out of the oil changer at work.
