i have a 3.25:1 ratio in my 9" and i get 16mpg hwy. this isnt enuff for me HAHA, so i want to do a 3:00:1 ratio. also it would be nice to reduce the rpms on the freeway so its easier on the engine when traveling at the speed of new jersey. do all i need is the ring and pinion? mine has play so this would also be a great time to fix that. where do i get this kind of setup? also how hard will it be to get the proper speedometer gear to correct the change? want to get all my ducks in a row before i begin the project.
thanks.
You know I don't do the books, but like going from 3.50 to 3.25 you need a 1 tooth change.
Drop your gear to high and you can lug the engine and hurt the mpg. If I was getting 16mpg I would leave it alone. Nobody else is getting what you are with the engine tranny axle setup that you have, NOBODIEE.
The same plastic speedometer DRIVEN gears (at the end of the cable) have been used from 1960 thru today on cars/trucks...so all are available from Ford.
16-17-18-19-20 & 21 tooth gears are available. The prices range from $2.00 each to $3.76 each.

yeah but that 16mpg is at 55-60mph in the right lane. if i go 70 mph i only get 14 or 15. and then if i run a/c also its less than that. if i do the conversion i think i may use 2nd gear a helluva lot more often and only kick it into Drive during flatland left lane highway driving. having that rear end would be like having an overdrive or a 4th gear. what combo do you have? i remember you saying you can almost do 90mph in 2nd gear.

The plastic speedo DRIVEN gears are calibrated to 7-10 MPH.
Oh, btw....when these vehicles were new, most of the speedo's were off at least 5 MPH. I remember reading road tests and was amazed on how far off the speedo's were.
Did'ja know (prolly not) that FoMoCo cars sold to all the rental car companies back then...used a driven gear that was one tooth less than what was called for?
Since the mileage wasn't free back then like it is today, the more miles piled up by a speedo that read fast, put more money in rental car company pockets.
I know you didn't drive that truck from NJ to Fla at 55 mph.
John
yeah i have several times. here and there i'll do 65. but usually 55-60. 7-10 mph? my buddy whom i drove with from seattle to orlando had a gps and the mileage was right on the money.
I've not heard of anybody getting much better than 16 in one of these trucks and when they say they get 18 I don't believe them.
Uh huh...it's not a bump, but...
