I have stock 4.6 liter v8 that gets avg 13 to the gallon. Is there anything. That will increase horsepower and gas millage like k&n intake or what? Thanks for all the advice!!
Your not trying very hard if your at 13 mpg. Use a lighter right foot, and dont go above 2200 rmp when you accelerate up to speed. cruise at 58-60 mph. The K&N will do nothing but lighten your wallet. How much time do you spend at constant highway speed compared to town?
ok judged by previous posts ill probably get burnt up for this but here is my solution. yes, take your foot out of it, but also try this. put in just an air filter, not a whole intake (same performance just different cost) and then go with a throttle body spacer. i can only recomend an airaid because that is all i have ever used. but this combination should cost about 160 and should be good for a couple mpg's. i had a 3.0 ranger and ran this and went from 15 city to almost 18 city. i know that was on a ranger, but the principles should be the same. the key is, you must do both at the same time. i tried each one on their own, and they did nothing, but together they were great. im getting ready to do the same thing to my 4.6 f150.
your fooling yourself with an aftermarket air filter and intake. the truck is fuel injected and can not be improved with a spacer. Only way to raise milage sugnificantly is to back off on the right foot.
well a 2000 ranger 4x4 with a 3.0 is also fuel injected and did see a 3 mpg improvement without changing my driving at all. you cannot in anyway dispute these numbers because this is what happened.
Replace the clutch fan with a pair of electric fans and you will free up some HP and should gain 1-2mpg. That is the ONLY mod I have done that has done both of the things you want. A tonneau cover is the only other mod I did that increased mileage by just over 1. A tuner will increase hp but I have never gained mileage in any vehicles I have used one in, I will say I do not use the "mileage" tunes I use the performance tunes.
I was getting 12.8mpg with a NPI 5.4L I'd say your 4.6L probably needs a tune up at the least if it is only getting 13 in stock trim. I've managed to get mine up to just over 16mpg With pretty much all the main bolt on's minus a TB spacer, probably $1500-$2K in mods altogether.
What is involved in a tune up? I have a 2001 Crew Cab and I'm getting about 14mpg. I had the plugs replaced last year. The motor has 110k on the clock. Running dino oil 5-30.
