2000 f-250 auto extended cab 4X4.
My tranny has been going for the last few months and today it really started going (have been towing a lot and when loaded the truck won't even move unless you backup first (this is in soft ground) It has been getting worse every load.
I really don't want to fix the auto because it is really expensive for me to get parts, and a good shop to do it. So i'm considering putting a 6 speed in.
How hard is it to do this, how many hours should i estimate to do this, do i need special tools? Is there a "plate" inside the cab under the carpet? What about the clutch i know there is a factory grommet, is it hard to install the clutch? And will i be able to make the cruise work? Will my PCM need to be changed?
Sorry for all the questions, just looking to see if this is justifiable. I searched and really didn't find anything of much use.
You're better off getting a BTS or John Wood tranny. It's even more complicated than you're imagining. The floor pan of your cab will need to be altered since there is not enough clearance to stick the manual in there. It will be less expensive to just get a built auto tranny that you never have to worry about.
I don't know how shipping cross border will affect the cost, but if it's too significant, you could probably find an installer just South of the border if you're willing to take a trip.
to much for a BTS, 4500 plus exchange =around 5000+ shipping+duty+labour.
It will cost that much to put a 6 speed in?
I really don't like autos, and especialy the 4R100 if it had 5 forward speeds(in ovrdrive) then it would be a much nicer truck to drive and tow with.
thanks for the link, anyone here done this?
i'll read more about what i can do to make my auto strong without buying a bts.
I have a while to consider.
Thanks for the link Huck. No I'm not thinking of doing a swap but figured if Charles got into the mix there would be a few laughs to be had, and I wasn't disappointed.
