I have an 82 Ford F350 Dually, 400, 2BBL, T-18 4 Speed. I've heard that lifter issues are common among the 400's, and I think my truck is having that same problem right now. I think it's currently only ticking on one set of lifters on one cylinder, but I do not know for sure. Is this a simple replacement? Can I pull the rocker arms off, pull the push rods out and use a magnet to get the lifters out for replacement or am I going to have to go in through the intake manifold?
To find out wich cyl it is, remove the valve cover on the side it sound like its coming from, lay rags over the top of the rockers then start it up. the rags keep the oil from going everywhere(ok they reduce the amount of oil going everywhere). You can put pressure on the rockers with your hands while they're moving and eliminate the noise when you find the right one. If it wont fit through the hole where the pushrod goes through you MIGHT be able to pull the dist and bring it out that way...but thats just a guess, I'm not familiar with the 400's
I would go get a can of Rislone and pour it in the engine, and then drive it for about 3 weeks. That stuff usually takes care of any ticking caused by sticky lifters.
The lifters can also tick because of low oil pressure, and 400's are famous for that too.
looks like dist hole wont work so unless there's a hole in the intake big enough it will have to come off. I'd be inclined to try a clener of some sort run through the oil. I've never tried it but i've always heard a qt of atf added to the oil works
