Transmission basics
I have a 79 F150 4x4 4speed truck with 350 gears in it that I am very disappointed in how it drives. I have completed a frame off restoration- so everything is new or refurbed. I really think the issue is the transmission. Not sure of the number, but it was common in the 70's truck- 4 speed with un syncronized first gear- so basically a three speed. I really wanted to keep the manual trans in it, but don't really want to go hunting a 5 speed out of a later truck to make it more streetable. With that being said, I was going to go with a C6 auto trans. To complete the swap, I am guessing I would need-C6, flex plate, auto steering column. Is the trans support brace the same? Is the drive shaft the same? Also- I have the same 4 speed transmission in my 70 bronco, linked to a 302. I realize the bell housing would be different- Is the clutch plate the same bolting up to 302 or 400m. What I am getting at is the 79 trans and clutch are brand new, and I am trying to swap everything that will fit. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
