Ive got a 77 f250 with a 351m in it. a rod broke inside the engine. Ive decided to put a 460 in it in its place but heres the thing. Im short on money but when i close on my house should get that 8,000$ thing. Do you think its worth it to piece the 351m back together for the time being and buy the motor in a couple months? if i just piece it back together will it last a couple months? If replacing just the rod will hold for a couple months i can do that i just dont want to do that and then 2 days later it go out. Too be honest ill prolly never look back at the 351m after i put the 460 in so if its goes it no loss.
I say don't even bother with the 351M. There's probably been a lot more damage done than you realize. Plus, you can't patch gum with tape. Wait a couple months and get the 460.
Unless you need it as a daily driver, I see no complication.
I wouldn't waste anymore money on the old engine. Go with the 460 in a couple of months. By waiting it also adds that much more money toward the 460. I own a 1977 f250 4x4 with a 351m as well and love it.....but it is running great. I still plan on going with the 460 in the future.
yep i agree with alot of people if one rod is out theres going to be many more problems so if u need the truck id say go to the local scrap yard or sumthing and find a good motor for the time being then when u do have the money go for the swap but if u dont need it now just park it till you can fix it. Good luck with everything
Thanks all for the opinions i am just gonna let it chill and wait till i have the money i do have 2 more questions though. What makes the difference in a 460(7.5L) and a 460(6.6L) and would it be easier to mod this engine pulled from the truck or still mounted in the truck. Theres so much i want to do to this truck but it will be a long process. i was thinking wait on the 460 and put it in the truck factory and then mod over time.
A 460 is a 7.5 and a 400 is a 6.6
Most any mods you would want to do could be done with the motor in the truck but they would be easier to do on an engine stand.
Put the money away and use it for solid investments. Find another way to finance the truck till your more solid financialy. I know it's boring but plan ahead with you being ahead.
