RV insurance
Who do you use? Ballpark cost? (if you don't mind sharing) Have you made any claims? Finally, customer service and/or anything else you'd like to share.
We got a trailer a couple months ago & bought 3 months of insurance for the unit when we made the purchase, but I'm shopping around. Most all of my insurances come due in Dec. and I'm looking to save a few bucks in 2010.
Thanks for the input,
gw
The reason we have it: God forbid my trailer catches fire or something in an RV park while we're out.. Without a specific policy for the T/H we'd be SOL (along with the neighbor who's $500K pusher went up in flames with ours)...
Talk to your insurance agent to see what they offer.. Be specific as to what you want protected..
I had a claim this year. I cut too close to a tree limb, and damaged some of the aluminum siding. Allstate paid to repair. Their customer service is excellent, that's why I remain a customer. However, they were pretty clueless about how to estimate the repair cost. In the end, I just chose a repair shop, the shop and the estimator spoke on the phone, and Allstate just accepted the shops estimate.
I probably will just keep the Allstate policy on the current trailer. It's around $200/year IIRC, and $500 deductible. But if we get a new more expensive trailer I think I will move the coverage to a company that specializes in RV insurance. Good Sam probably.
One thing to know about RV insurance is that you can suspend coverage while the unit is parked at your home, if you want. For example, if you only RV during the summer months, and you don't think the unit will be damaged sitting in your yard, suspend the coverage and save money. When summer comes, all it takes is a phone call to reconvey the coverage. We use ours year round, so I don't do that, and I don't think Allstate is really set up to handle that anyway. Again, they don't really know what they are doing with RV's.
Contents of the trailer should be covered under your homeowners insurance, if you own your home. That is true even if you are tent camping. While camping, your campsite is your home and you are covered. So I don't pay extra for that.
