What is the procedure for finishing a sheet metal butt weld. The picture is of a tig weld. Do I have to tig it on both sides and then grid one side down. Seems like if I grind down one side of a single side weld it would be a weak joint.
Looks like your patch is a little small? How strong of a joint does this need to be? If its body and no real load I would say welding one side and grinding should be fine. If your holding up your seat or need a stronger patch then weld both sides.
Looks like a floor patch but its too close for me to tell. Maybe if we could see the whole picture ( area here ) and understand whats getting patched ware I could give ya a better idea.
I agree. The weld penetrates through the gap in a butt-weld, so it's like its welded from both sides (as long as it was hot enough - whuch it generally looks to be). You just "dress" the side you can see.
I am guessing you are going to cut out the other holes and add more patches? This will add to the strength overall.
That is a running board on a 49' F2. The other side looks better and there is penetration but there is a seam(line). I think I could spend the rest of my life grinding it down. How do people weld half quarters down the side of the car. I would think this could be a nightmare.
Try grinding with the edge of a cut-off wheel or thin grinding wheel on your 4-5inch angle grinder. A little here, a little there to keep the heat from concentrating. Once you have most if it close to the metal, switch to a 36 or 40 grit disc to smooth it out. Then fill it.
