04 auto hubs

I have an 04 3/4 ton 4x4 with auto hubs that you can lock in. when I turn the 4x4 **** it acts like it wants to go in to fourwheel drive and wont stay in. I can lock the hubs in and it works fine. I need advice on this can the hubs just be dirty and be cleaned or can there be another problem any advice will be appreciated.

Even after you start driving they dont stay in? or when your stuck? These hubs in auto are vacum operated and may not engage when only your rear wheels a spinning.
