My 65 F-100 is having a problem with draining my battery if it's not started. This is the second battery that I have installed in the last three months and it has only been a couple of weeks since the last time it was started. I believe that somewhere there is a wire grounding out causing it to slowly drain. Now, the wiring in this truck is enough to give anyone a nice headache and I believe instead of trying find the cause of this power drain, I should just replace my trucks wiring harness. It's current wiring is nothing but a tangle of multicolored wires with some that just dangle without being connected, and I've even pulled out 20-30 ft of wire that was not connected on either end. I hoping someone out here can recommend a good company to purchase a new harness through. The easier to install the better, but I want something of quality that will last and never resemble the mess I'm currently dealing with.
I looked through their online catalog under "classic trucks" but did not see anything for a 1965 Ford. I am not sure if there is enough of a difference between a 65 and a 67 to make that model not suitable.
I always thought replacing the whole harness was a little drastic. But if that is the route you want to go the painless system for the 67 should be pretty close.
I agree with EricJ on it is extreme to replace the entire harness. I am in the middle of it on my '66. Mine had a similar issue except the battery drained in about 20 minutes. The person who owned the truck before me had some serious miswires. Like the cable from the (-) side of the battery was attached to the Solinoid, and the (+) was attached to the block. I easily caught that one, but it did not solve the issue.
I went with the EZ wire 18 curcuit. I know it is overkill it has all the wires to completely modernize the truck, but it was $200.00 and every wire is marked every 6 inches what it is. So I don't have to constantly refer to a diagram. They also have a 12 curcuit, but it was only $10.00 more for the 6 more curcuits, and I like having more available fuses than I need.
I think every old vehicle I have bought or worked on has had serious Previous owner miswiring syndrome. But it never seems to be bad enough to replace the harness, i usually just cut out all the obvious screwups then check for other problems. As for adding extra fuses, the marine supply stores seem to have excellent choices on fuse boxes.
I know it might seem drastic to replace the entire harness, but I'm tired of dealing with this rats nest of wires. I figure if I replace it I can start over fresh without something else failing me down the line as it wears out, plus I'm hoping to install other items such as A/C, high end stereo system, and keyless entry so I would like to have plenty of options. Now I looked at the Painless Wiring System, the EZ Wiring System, and LMC's wiring harness. I'm just wondering why the EZ Wiring is drastically cheaper than the others. Is it of poorer quality or is it because it is a universal system and not vehicle specific? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Semper
