I have 97 4.6 that starts hard when outside temps under 40degrees.No codes.Plenty of power otherwise.Replaced IAC @ MAF sensor. It takes 4-5 starts to get it going when cold and I have to jiggle the accelerator to get it going.Vehicle has 40K on it.
What's next?
Fuel pump pressure was checked and filter replaced by garage I took it to. They said that they didn't have the time to chase down the problem after I told them they hadn't fixed it.
Just checked the seal where MAF sensor goes to air filter housing and found gasket sticking out into air flow a little bit so I fixed that. But I still won't know if I fixed it until tomorrows cold start. I'd clean the EGR but I would have to have very small hands to get at it as its under everything.
Thanks for suggestion.
i'll opt for the fuel pump going away myself . had another brand vehicle i bought really cheap , a 1/2 ton , to beat on for awhile that had that same issue . a new pump assembly and a lot cussing later and walla . no more hard starts or starting fluid to get it to fire .by the way to those of you with one of the late 80's through 97 gm trucks for whatever reason , heres a tip . cut a hole in the bed above where the pump is , neatly of course . put some hinges on it and a zsus fastener or ???? and you got an easy instant access trap door to change the pump assembly in about 20 minutes ............ wanna know how i figured that one out ??????? let's just say da-- junk gm's ..... if it hadn't been cheap i'da spared myself the grief !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s the sensor for the maf in my 95 bird had gone away in mine and made my 4.6 a little cranky and rough running . maybe check it . after some investigating / research / cross referencing i found the sensor in my 91 bird parts donor for my 53 { 5.0 equipped } was the same thing and walla a free fix ....................
