First I want to say that I have read a ton of stuff about chirping belts and generally it seems to be the belt itself. I changed almost everything in my serpentine line except my water pump before changing a belt that had less then 4k miles on it which worked for 2k miles and the chirp is back with a vengeance! I know for sure it is the belt. What I don’t know but assume is that something is out of alignment causing the belt to work fine for a few thousand miles before squealing like a banshee. What do I do or who would I see to ensure my serpentine system is aligned? Has anyone had this issue? The belts I replace look like new with no noticeable damage at all. 2000/F350/7.3L/single alt/AC/Auto/4X4/153k
I had a belt chirp also and I was about to pull my hair out, to make a long story short I used some brake cleaner on the belt while the engine was running and no more chirp, that was almost 10,000 miles ago.
We just had a thread on this same kind of problem. He did everything he could, but it ended up being a bad water pump. With the belt off, see if you can move the fan side to side. If the pully moves, then that would be a broblem.
The belt tensioner and the waterpump are the two main culprits of squeaky and chirping belt noises so I've read. A neighbor and I just went through this the other week with his '02 PSD. He revved the engine while I looked at the serp belt and the tensioner was toast. I slightly wobbled but he replaced it and no more squeak. Good luck.
Everything but the water pump was replaced. The fan does not wobble and is tight the way it should be. Also the reason I can logically (in my mind) rule out everything else but the belt is that the noise stops immediately when a new belt is put on (tested 3 times now) I have tried soap/belt dressing/brake cleaner/WD40...all work for no more then 2 minutes before squeak is back.
It seems to me that a pulley is out of alignment and even with a new belt eventually it gets baked or stressed to the point of squeaking. Does that even make sense?
