i'll start by saying i have watched this site for a long time ,so thank you for all the good information in the past and in the future.also clay said you gyes would be a lot of help. now on to my problem and i hope i don't rambel to much I have a late99 withsuper chip, exauhst, and intake soon to be changed. my problem is lots of gray smoke on axceleration with what feels like a miss, but truck starts fine although with what sounds like an injector nock sometimes on left or ds bank after it is warmed up. I have done the buzz test and contribution test both were good. also a compresion test on the left or ds bank. front to back 400-380-420-420. thanks in advance because i feel lost son't know if it maters but i thingk i have a injector hanging up
Welcome to FTE. The contribution test should have picked up any miss you may have. Did you get any rotational velocity (perdel) readings when you had the truck on a scanner?
Just a guess on my part, but have you had the CPS recall done? Have you tried making the same sort of acceleration run with the truck programmed back to stock so the Superchips isn't trying to help?
The "new & improved" CPS has been known to cause a "slight miss" in some trucks, and the gray smoke may just be the Superchips best impression of the black smoke so many here see under acceleration after you put a real tuner on your truck. That Clay fellow could probably help you out with the right parts to turn that gray smoke black.
Thanks for the quick reply. we used an older snap on scanner so all we could do was buzz and contribution test, so no i did not get any rotational velocity readings and i am not quite sher what that is. some other things i forgot to mention were that this came on sudenly and there is a LOT of gray smoke even under lite acceleration. also that so called clay gye will be hearing again from me as soon as i get this figured out. man i am scater brained tonight, the left or ds up pipe is wet from what i think is fuel. And i have the wonderful updated cam sensor. Superchip is turned back to stock. lalso should i be worried about the variance in compresion in the cylinders
Glad to hear you got w/ Clay for your troubles! He has been a huge help for me.
If you have an injector going it may not throw codes or fail a buzz test. my truck showed no signs through RV or Buzz tests. I was just going down the highway.. loss of power and billowed grey smoke till I let off the gas..
One easy test to run and I have to give credit to Tymar Performance for telling me this trick.
Start the truck. While in park give it full throttle. If you have an injector messing up the tach needle will jump at 2000rpm to 2200rpm.. It sounds weird but it's a sure sign of a bad injector.
I hope this helps. and if you get sticks from Clay you will be super happy. I'm 40k in on my stage 1's and I love them... I can get all smoky!!
Any more questions ask them or feel free to send me a msg.
thanks andrew. my problem is that I already have thvalve covers and glow plugs out. I was considering sending my injectors out too get them tested cins i was going to get all new ones if they were bad anyways, do you think that ias a good next step. if I get to that point with that little bit of differance in compresion should i be getting stage 2's or1's? Hopfully that is the same as yours because it is rather simaler sounding. And Clay has ben a ton of help! Thanks Brandon
If you plan on testing them perhaps you could talk to Clay about sending them to Ryan Casserly. He could test them and then if bad rebuild them and ship them right back.
As far as which injector to go with... I would say it depends on how much you tow. I went stage 1 b/c I haul really heavy stuff and I need my EGT's manageable. This being said I haul over 26k gross alot and with water injection I would prob be ok with stage 2 sticks.
What are your goals for your truck. Clay has Stage 2 sticks and a 38R and is putting out some very nice HP numbers.
Which injector you choose is based on your goals. Tell me your goals and I can help you a bit more.
P.S. I woulda went stage 2's but I had a ton of money tied up on injectors haha
well i am going to and try and get the compresion test on the other side done tonight as well as get the injectors pulled and get them sent out for testing. ill post up when i get the results back on the injectors. i hope thats the case so i have an excuse to upgrade sticks, tuner, and up pipes.

GRAY SMOKE= LESS WASTED POWER..buddy got a cummins pulling truck and it dont smoke one puff going down the truck..needless to say he didnt lose this year ..black smoke looks good but its wasted power
will see tamorowabout that gray smoke, because i just finished compresion check and had 320 on cylinder 7 but battery was starting to get low so well chrge it up tamorow and him it improves drasticly or i'm screwed.
Just an update last night i charged the batteries all the way up and ran multiple Compresion tests on the two cylinders that were down needles to say they are all at 400-420 what a releif. so lesson learned make sure for the compresion test tou have completly charged batteries. hopfully all get the injectors pulled this weekend and sent out monday for new ones. thanks for all you help and all keep you updated.
