Post 97 Expedition EB Compass

The built in compass always points South. The dealer says that the problem is the 'toll road transponder' attached to the windshield by the compass which caused the compass to demagnatize. The toll road authority says nonsense, it can't happen. Who is pulling my leg?

Have you tried reprogramming it? I saw in my owners manual that you can reprogram it. Give it a try...

Reprogramming/Calabrating didn't work. It still reads South.

Have you had any luck with it since your last post? My 98 Nav. is doing the exact same thing, and at this point im not willing to take it to a shop for something so minor, its just an inconvienence. Funny how we can drive trucks that have every ammenety known to man and still get ticked at a device that has the same inteligence as moss growing on one side of a tree, any help to make the moss move would be appreciated.,

Is the transponder 'active' or 'passive' (does it generate a signal?). If it was active I'd say maybe, slightly, possibly. Passive, no way.

I had the same thing happen to my 99 Expy. I also have a NY EZPASS in the top center of my windshield. I tried re-calibrating the compass but it did no good. I turned off the trip computer display for a month or so. To my surprise, when I turned the trip computer back on, the compass was working again. What I do now is leave it off unless I need the compass or find out my approximate MPG.

I have an IL I-Pass on one side of my rear-view mirror, and a Radar Detector on the other side...no, wait...someone I know has an I-Pass on one side and a detector on the other...and 'from what I've heard' it doesn't affect anything on the vehicle compass in my...uh...his Expy.

I have a "friend" with an F150 who has the exact same set up as FarmLaw's friend, and the compass works fine. It also works fine on "his" Buick, which has the compass display in the mirror (and the controller right there). Although your transponder could be different, I think the dealer is pulling your leg. Since everybody puts it there, wouldn't the toll authority be getting tons of complaints if that were the case?

We're not paranoid if everybody really is out to get us!

98 Expy EB and I have the same problem; always pointing SE. Tried calibration and reset with no luck. I will try to turn it off and test again in a few weeks. I have Florida Sunpass transponder above the mirror.
