[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Sep-02 AT 10:25 PM (EST)]Ok. This is not sane. But I need to know what would be a practical distance from the device.
For starters a 20lb bottle of propane filled (has the old style valve).
A bag of flour suspended above it.
A lit highway flare beside it.
And for the coup de gra - a railroad torpedo taped to the side.
My plan is to hit the suspended bag of flour first, then immediatly nail the torpedo on the propane bottle. I am guessing that 100 yards from and behind a solid object would be sufficent?
This is all for fun and not in any way a test for bigger stuff. It will be conducted in a safe area (like a river channel).
I would go for the propane bottle directly. It should be enough to scatter the flour on it's own.
But then - I would have the old valve replaced with a new one or use it as a mooring float at a favorite fishing hole, personally.
Depending on the caliber of the round used, and if it hits low enough on the bottle to be at or underneath the liquid level, the energy of the round may split the case (tank) wide open rather than producing a small hole.
The Hawken .54 I used to own, loaded to near critical used to be good for hydraulically dismantling fluid container in a spectacular way.
Since solids and fluids are incompressible, the force is immediately transmitted to all sides of the container. This tends to split seams on all sides and thoroughly disperse the contents very satisfactorily...
* Try practicing on a mostly full sealed container of water.
I was going to use a SKS or maybe my bolt action 223. But after taking into consideration your points I think I will use the 338 mag and hit low as you suggest.
The tank is old and not worth putting a new valve on. And since I don't fish this seemed the way to have a little fun.
To be quite honest I am concerned about the shrapnel. My goal is to set this thing up on a river sandbar - light the flare and hightail it up the banks and hid behind several trees. I am looking for 100 yards distance at a minumem.
I would love to have the camera rolling during the firing but it seems that when you have a camera, that it screws everything up. i.e. look at what these idiots did before the killed themselves!
100 yrds should be suficent (oops that sounds like a famous last words statment oh well)with propane your looking at a 20yd min blast area with shrapnel at least another 50 yrds. so 70 to 80 yards damage area I recomend getting deep like 5yds into the dence trees for shot this will minamise shrapnal to you it would suck to be a tree there though anyhoo the camera is a must so you can upload the mpeg to us to see this BIG WONDERFUL BALL OF FLAME!!!

I agree it is not sane. But there are many things I have done that are not considered normal by many. We tried this first on a small bottle of propane (the ones you use for camp stoves) and it put out a little ball of fire but no real pressure or combustion. Sort'ta like lighting a bowl of gas. And as deviant minds work the question become "Would a 20lb bottle be better?". Some have shot the small bottles with no ignition source and nothing happens. It just loses the propane.
Yup, it's not smart. Never said I was. But I do plan on putting the odds in my favor as much as possible. After all this whole thing could be a bust and it just blows out the propane. Or it will KA-BLUUEEY
Er, bear in mind please that nearby trees have a tendency to combust as well...
Cheeziss - I can already see the headlines:
Tennessee man suspected of terror training!
(Dateline: Sevierville TN)
A local man who has apparently recieved pilot training, was today indicted on numerous counts of arson, firearms violations, destruction of public forest lands, reckless endangerment, construction of a destructive device, and possesion with intent to commit self immolation.
This sounds fun! Very dangerous, but fun. I used to do that kind of thing in my younger days. 100 yards should be ok, but you can't really tell with shrapnel. Go for a large caliber, hard hitting round. .338 sounds the best of your listed choices. A 12 gauge slug would be good to. Be careful.
You all know what the last words of a red neck are?
It's even worse if he say "hold my beer" in that sentance!!

IF you really want to make a big bang, think more on the lines of a small amount of percussively detonatable explosive, old fashioned dynamite works well, and strap it to a sealed drum of diesel oil.. retire to a 200 yard distance, and take aim with a hunting round. If you hit the blasting material you will create the same amount of visible explosion as is seen in every action film in America, almost the same way. Another way would be to have a remote controlled blasting cap in the explosive. No I am not a latent terrorist, or a film director, I read a lot. Propane is not a particularly good thing to explode. Diesel works much better.

I do have some small pieces of plastic (railroad torpedoes) that I may try and tape to the thing. However, getting the 338 to be within 1/2" of center at 100 yards will be tough. If I could shot 1/2 inch patterns with it at 200 yards I'd forget the whole thing and just be happy to shoot that well.
I'll keep the idea about the drum of diesel in mind though. That one has potential.
I do realize that distance from the device is Key. I will put my beer down before picking up the 338.
