I looked into adding the factoy stuff and it was crazy. I bought a viper setup at best buy for under one benjamin (thinking it was less then $80 but who knows) And it works great and install was gravy. Only thing I wish it did was keep the dome light on when I unlocked it, it may have that option but didnt look into it when Iinstalled it and have lost the destructions.....
In my model year '03. there were different GEMs (generic electronic modules???) for those trucks with and without keyless entry. Even if a truck already had power door locks, just buying a new GEM (Ford part only) was more costly than an aftermarket alarm with 2 keyless fobs. And you get the benefit of an alarm/anti-theft system by going aftermarket.
so far, in my experience, the electrical engineering in the 2008's is nothing like previous years.
I've found that I can get a transmitter from the sponsors for less than $40, but I don't even begin to know where it should be located. I'd like to check for a plug.
It doesn't make any sense though. There is no longer a GEM, just the Smart Junction Box now... but I can't find anywhere that says how many different ones there are.
I bought a $30 kit on ebay, it works pretty well and wasn't that hard to install. Everything is hidden and you can't tell it's even there, and like normal running the wires was the hardest part. I did have one problem and on the rear doors on the crew cab I had to hook up two actuators/plungers to get it to lock. The doors has a rod that runs from the latch across the door to a swivel bracket where another rod ran up to the plunger thing. (the part you grab to unlock/lock the door manually) It didn't matter if you put the actuator on the rod that went across the door or up and down it would unlock but not lock. My fix was to put a actuator on both rods and it works fine now, I just had to order two more actuators for the other door. Cheap, and simple, and it works.
PS, I'm a function over looks type of person to a point. One my CBR the tach needle broke somehow, so since the part that actually turns still worked I opened the tach and super glued a toothpick to it. Might not be pretty but it works, and it's a funny story to tell.
