Hard start

Okay so I replaced the glow plugs the relay, fuel filter checked the level of the HPOP everything is working . I still have a hard start on cold mornings the truck blows out white smoke when cranking. I have also just installed new batteries and starter. The truck will start fine on warm days and if the block heater is plugged in. Im at a loss what it could be now .Any input would be of help. 99 f350 7.3L

I would consider switching your oil to Shell Rotella syn 5w40... your starts will be quicker and your engine will love it. You can use it year round.. You can also extend the time period between oil changes to make up for the higher cost..
People here have put a cup of 15w40 and 5w40 in a freezer over nite and after seeing difference, you would never go back to 15w40 again..
Go to Walmart...

UVCH

Might want to OHM out the pins in the valley that hook to the UVCH, if it is loose, the new glow plugs arent going to be getting any juice, hence the white smoke. Believe there are 9 pins, the 2 outer pins on each side are the glow plugs, should be reading around 1.5 ohms IIRC.

If you oil is thick during a cold start, your injectors won't work correctly cuz they work directly from your high pressure side of your crankcase oil. That is why synthetic oil works much better in colder weather. The block heater keeps that dino oil thinner, thus helping the injector to fire... Alot of people here don't need to plug in the engine heater when they are using synthetic oil..like 5w40.

If you are trying to start right after the WTS lamp goes out that may be too soon for the temps you're in. The GPs will stay on for up to two minutes after the WTS lamp goes out. Try waiting another 20 seconds and see if that helps. Longer even if it's really friggin' cold. But remember, the GPs use up allot of battery power.

You might have a few bad injectors and it will make it hard to start but will start fine while it is warm.

YA im starting to think maybe a few bad injectors . I changed the oil to the synthetic the other night and it turn over faster but still giving a me a hard start .. The other thing is if i leave the chip on stock setting it will try to start but if I turn it up on high setting wich gives it for fuel pressure it will start after a few crank. So with that im thinking bad injectors . GRrr so anyone know of a good place to get some new ones ? Plus when its cold it acts like its missing and the truck rumbles ..

At this point I would get your fault codes read..(by a scanner designed for our engines). Are you getting a SES light ?

What type of scanner do you have? On my scanner, I must have the ignition key in the start position (engine not running) before it will read any codes..

A generic OBD II scanner will not read codes on a Powerstroke.

Are you sure you are waiting long enough brfore starting as I stated in post #7?
