Changing 2WD Ball Joints for Dummies
#16
Reps were sent for this thread...i used these destructions to complete the upper and lowers on both sides...might as well while i was doing it...the only hitch was with the instructions for the removal/ install tool...they were backwards for my truck...in the tools instructions, there were no directions telling which cup to use for what...and the diagrams showed the ball joints being pressed in from the bottom, where in my application, they dropped in from the top...there was no mention of the retaining clip for the lowers...
on a lighter note...once i got all that figured out...unlike the Ford OEM ball joints that were on Bit Mo', the Moog uppers and lowers came with lube fittings...didn't have those before...
Now, i do have a question about the shims in the uppers...will they need to be replaced when i go have the truck aligned??? It seems like the drivers side wheel is straight and the passenger side is still a bit cambered in at the top...will the upper shim correct that issue???
The stealership stated this job paid 4.2 labor hours...i completed the job in 4 hours of my time, and that included washing my hands several times to keep the bearing grease off of everything else...these instructions were great...thanks again...

Thanks for the update!
You are correct - I did omit the part about the retaining clip on the lower ball joint, and I am glad you caught it.
As for the diagrams, I agree - they show the ball joints incorrectly. The instructions I wrote tried to identify the correct way to do it for that reason. I welcome any and all suggestions to make them better.

So you did a leveling kit. I just tried it this week on my 2011 2WD. Can't work with the way the newer spindle and I-beam meet when you try to camber it within specs. Couldn't even get there with my 2" level kit(the black spring spacers with the bolt extensions). With 2 1/2* camber bushing, spindle hits I-beam. Tough luck this week. Took it off last nite until I get to where I wanna pull that junk out and do some grinding. Ugh...

Just did the passenger side upper and lower on my truck. easy peasy. did have to make a longer thimble piece for the C clamp style press. Got about halfway out and the joint bottomed out. FYI a piece of 2.5" exhaust tubing worked great. took a couple hours because I was going slow but it did include me doing an alignment in my driveway.
