I have a 1986 ford f-250 6.9 liter ats turbo. It had a hard time starting a while ago would take forever to start and know it will not start at all. I changed the batterys two optima red top gel type, then i changed the glowplugs, then i changed the fuel filter and put some diesel kleen in it and then i changed the mechanical fuel pump, and the fuel line from the fuel pump to fuel filter and changed the air filter and it will not start still.
OOO yaa it did start with the fuel pump suction side hooked up to a 5 gallon tank of diesel. So not sure whats wrong with it.
Did you check the tank transfer switch in the dash and at the tanks? I had the same prob with mine around 3 mos ago, and believe it or not, that what it was.

yeah, mine went too.luckily for me (especially where im new to diesel's) is it was burning up and sounded like an electric fuel pump.i thought it had an electric pump right after i got the truck just a bit ago,and before i got to really looking everything over.
bypassed it for now.i think i'l just get one from a salvage yard.new price is foolish and aftermarket requires wire splicing(tho i dont really mind this, then it would be new-hmmm-yeah,now that i think about it,il probably do this.)
simple to bypass it to see if its not working tho yeah.-fuel gauge dont work tho darn it lol.
i just blew through the other valves to the rear tank, and made sure they where open-plugged the front tank into these and left wires off.very easy.but she would never run with that blocked up like it was.no fuel can get by.

your test of hooking up a fuel can directly to the engine told you a few things.
you dont have a problem with lift pump/injectors/glowpugs/relay/alt/starter/cables/etc/etc/etc/.and if you hooked in at your lift pump, and it runs fine, this means your problem is fuel lines/FSV(fuel selector valve) or bad pickup in fuel tank(s).
your problem then would mean fuel delivery.so you spent money on the wrong parts in other words see?
oh you did lol.
hmm.well, sometimes we learn the hard way i guess.iv done worse things learning probably too lol.
the more i read, the more i understand how basic these IDI's are really.
man,its nice not having to deal with all that computer controlled bs!
this is great!
The 86 truck had a water seperator mounted drivers side in the corner of the fire wall and fender, there is a pull ring on top of it to drain the water.
Those things are famous for not sealing and letting the lift pump suck in air.
Also the fuel line from the fuel tank selector valve to the front of the truck is metal, and could have a rust hole in it letting it suck air.
And last but not least, did the new lift pump have and arm bent almost 90 degrees or was it almost straight?
The straight arm units should have specific directions on how to install, they must be followed or lift pump or engine damage may result.
