I was driving across a field to my next hunting spot and suddenly found myself in the middle of a mudhole and loosing speed fast. I let off the gas and qiuck hit the 4x4 and got back on the gas to keep momentum, but the 4x4 didn't engage right away and when it did it slammed in. It sounded like it was the transfer case that made the noise. the only thing I can think of was that I didn't let off the gas long enough while engaging the 4x4 and it couldn't shift because of driveline torque. The speedo was showing around 15mph when it slammed in, but forward speed wasn't that much because I was spinning a little. do you think it might have damaged anything? I continued using the 4x4 and it worked fine afterwards with no unusual noises.
If it still shifts in/out fine, chances are that nothing was damaged. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it, just try to get it into 4wd before you really need it to know it still works.
While all wheels are moving at the same speed, yes. The clunk he heard was likely due to the front wheels not moving as fast as the spinning rear wheels when the transfer case shifted.
don't worry, built ford tough right??? Have done that many times in my work truck 350 diesel. Doesn't seem to bother it. Just keeps pluging along like the day I bought it in 99.
